If I’m working a part time job, will I still be able to join AmeriCorps? Yes, although it depends on the position you've applied for. Our positions require you to serve approximately 20 hours a week. However, you are responsible for assessing your own schedule and determining how much you are capable of committing yourself to do. Will S.E.E. AmeriCorps work around my school/work schedule? It depends on the position you've applied for; some sites have more flexible daily schedules than others.
Will S.E.E. AmeriCorps allow time off for holidays? Yes. S.E.E. AmeriCorps gives its members time off for the Thanksgiving holidays and a time off for the Christmas holidays. The City of West Monroe observes most federal holidays. If I’m attending classes as a full time student, will I still be able to join AmeriCorps? Yes. As stated above, this depends on the position you've applied for. You are repsonsible for assessing your own schedule. Is the living allowance taxed? Yes. All members are required to complete necessary paperwork (W-4’s and I-9’s) to begin receiving a living allowance. These forms determine how much will be held out of each check for taxes. Will my participation in AmeriCorps affect my financial aid? No. The living allowance and the education award should not affect the amount of financial aid you may receive nor your eligibility for financial aid. How does my education award work? To qualify for an education award, you must successfully complete your term of service in S.E.E. West Monroe AmeriCorps. Your education award can be used in the following ways: to pay all or part of the cost of attending an institution of higher education (including certain vocational programs). This includes room and board, tuition and books, or other student related expenses. In general, schools accredited to receive the Pell Grant can receive this education award. The award is held by the National Trust Fund in Washington,D.C. for up to 7 years; members may use this education award at any time within the 7 years. The award is taxable income in the year it is used. If I'm out of school, how does my award work? Can I defer payments to my student loan? Education awards can be used to pay off remaining balances of student loans (Stafford, PLUS, etc). While you are an AmeriCorps member, you can defer your student loans until you've complete your term of service.
